Somalia: Puntland leader criticizes TFG support of armed clan militia

17 Nov 17, 2010 - 10:27:21 PM

The leader of Somalia's Puntland State government has criticized the actions of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) whose leaders recently met with armed rebels in Mogadishu, Radio Garowe reports.

Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed Farole, the president of the stable region of Puntland in northeastern Somalia, told a crowd gathered on Tuesday to mark the Muslim celebration of Eid-ul-Adha at Mire Aware Stadium in Puntland capital of Garowe that the new TFG Cabinet consists of three seats given to Puntland natives.

"Out of three seats, two seats were personally hand-picked by [TFG President] Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, and so they do not represent us [Puntland]," President Farole declared.

He continued to accuse the two ministers, who still have not been approved by the 550-seat TFG Parliament, of supporting "anti-peace elements."

SSC militia

Last week, a delegation consisting of leaders of a self-declared armed clan militia in northern Somalia calling itself the Sool, Sanaag and Cayn (SSC) militia traveled to Mogadishu where they met with TFG leaders, including President Sharif.

The SSC militia has claimed responsibility for numerous military attacks against forces loyal to Somaliland, a separatist region in northwest Somalia that contests ownership over Sool and Sanaag regions with Puntland.

Although SSC militia has not directly attacked Puntland so far, President Farole has strongly opposed the militia on grounds that Somalia does not need any new rebel group.

Further, Farole has argued that the Somaliland-Puntland land dispute over Sool and Sanaag regions should be handled through dialogue and other peaceful means, and not through the SSC militia's violence.

SSC supporters say Puntland's government has taken too long to respond to Somaliland' s military aggression in Sool region, which worsened when Somaliland troops seized Sool provincial capital of Las Anod in Oct. 2007.

Warning to TFG

President Farole said the TFG has "a short time left" and advised TFG leaders to work harder to help Somalia recover from decades of conflict, adding that Puntland is ready to help and play its role.

"We are always helping them [TFG] as we have been for years. So many Puntland soldiers died in Mogadishu and some [Puntland soldiers] are still fighting for the TFG in Mogadishu today even though there is new President [sharif]," Farole said.

But he strongly warned the TFG leadership not to cooperate with the SSC militia, saying that they were "promised weapons" but he did not elaborate who promised to provide weapons to the SSC militia.

"Puntland did not secede from Somalia and we support TFG. However, this does not mean that the TFG dictates to Puntland. Twelve years ago people of Puntland decided to establish their own government and we still stand by that today," Farole concluded.

In recent days, Puntland officials including State Minister for Democratization Process and Federal Affairs, Dr. Abdi Jimale, and State Minister for International Cooperation, Prof. Abdikadir Hashi, have issued public statements criticizing the TFG and its relations with Puntland.

Since 2004, when the TFG was formed, Puntland has been the interim government's main domestic backer. But in 2009, when the Djibouti Process granted President Sharif's political faction 275 additional seats in the TFG parliament, relations between TFG and Puntland have been worsening.

Faroole is in a dire need of a competent media advisor (Libaax or good Duke can volunteer for this :D ).

Seriously, he needs to project a consistent presidential posture. I now he is a very smart man, with practical political convictions, but his trigger happy tongue seems to be his greatest Achilles’ heel.

Xiinoow, if the old man has any issue, it is that of clarity where his circuitous tangling always leaves a room for misinterpretation. His politics when it comes to the TF, is praiseworthy but the President needs to cultivate a sense of personal clarity when trying to articulate a narrowly defined political stand. He needs to appreciate the perils of spinmasters and the techniques they utilize to stimulate "straw man" argument to rework the truth. Repeating vague statements that are a fodder for spinsters will eventually lead to image problems.

Hopefully the old man will employ new techniques in the future. As a no-nonsense leader, Faroole should not imperil his repute with hanging fruits.

Aadan Doolar and the "Aaran Jaan" folks who surround him, please take notice. :D:D

Faroole definitely needs good advisors. His current advisor is tied by courtesy and filial respect to be honest and brutal with the truth. His petty squabbles with a weak TFG, chasing phantoms in the Bari mountains, his inability to dismantle the PIS, extraordinary rendition of his Somali brethren have shown that he is a leader who is out of touch with the average citizen. The flag waving and grand speeches on nation building in Minnesota seem to be a distant past.

xiinfaniin,

Rather it seems your in dire need for competent media outlet... an attempt to sideline and worse yet cripple Puntland has been made, and no Faroole has no issue with Farmaajo since the man has kept consistent presidential posture in that matter, rather it's Sharif and his mentors that the state has an issue with, in particular his objection to the Galkacyo agreement signed between the late premier and Faroole and the drafted federal constitution which saw the late premier out. These though pales in comparison when you factor in Sharif's mentors latest plan to cripple the state internally and externally.

Faroole should be concerned about the TFG's increasing support of the subversive elements tending to destabilize Puntland and creating tension in the region; he should extremely be concerned about the negative attitude that the TFG leadership assumes towards Puntland progress in the arena of public diplomacy, why should the USA two track police toward Somalia" warrant criticism? It was twelve years ago that the people of Puntland decided to establish their own autonomous government and they still stand by that today. The only working relationship between the TFG and Puntland should be one based on consultation not dictation, Somalia is past the 21 years of dictatorship.

Let's not forget that it was the UN Secretary General special envoy to Somalia Augustine Mahiga who said, "Puntland has achieved success in security and stability that must be emulated by the rest of Somalia." I have no doubt the interested international community are left scratching their head as to why Sharif's circle want to antagonize a model state.

I don't think there is any dispute in Sanaag region. Every clan in post-anarchic Somalia maintains its own security, therefore a temporary political alliance should never be confused with real authority over a region. Galka'yo, a small town in central Somalia is divided into 2 clan-administered SECTIONS even though the 2 communities have lived together and intermarried over centuries. Galmudug for instance traces its history of administration to Hobyo Sultanate.

Seriously let's be cautious of the heightened clan conscience such groundless claims of the so called "border disputes" create. If "PL" and "SL" have already carved their pieces of tribal lands, illegally, from the rest of Somalia, then other regions can and will head on that PERILOUS path of division and secessionism if necessary.

NASSIR: Ma anaa waalan mise Cadan baa laga heesayaa? :D

PL admin can not have both ways. Since when peaceful means become a strategy of reclaiming the regions lost to the secessionists in the north western regions? since when Farole sub-clan self-entitled the ownership of ******** and ********* countries? How long could the IDPs of LA city wait?, when will PL leadership nacnacda iska deynaysaa as such it is an internal matter? I wonder if the president clearly understands the tenets of PL charter and under the circumstances it was conceived?, for the record, security alliance was its purpose. Taasina meesha ay marayso fariidna waa ogyahay doqona loo sheegi mayo.

I don't know who advices president Farole, properly Duke from SOL or his son, the editor of Garowe Online, does but his political gaffes have been compounding. Mar mar baan is idhaahdaa war ninka afkiisa iyo dhegihiisu isma maqlaan miyaa, mar buu odhanaya SSC ma aha PL oo waa argagixiso, hadana mar kaluu odhanayaa Maakhir iyaguna waa waalan yihiin oo waa argagixiso, dee waa yaabe yaa PL haddaba ah? His nonsenses are out there all to see but suffice to say; PL's political relevance is going south not only because president Farole is a leader who is neither charismatic nor visionary but the ****** political elite have proved to be toothless in our times who can not see trees from the forest.

PL still has the opportunity to be a model region for the resurrection of the Somali Republic but its current political formation can NOT self sustain, period.

Mar hadaan ka gabyoo, go'aygiina ka qaatay, maxaa iiga gidhiish ah smile.gif

Mainly my sentiments are towards to PL leadership. The silence of prominent **** politicians are also bothersome if not colossal in regards to where PL is headed politically and how other stakeholders in particular **** and ******* communities are treated is a matter of a concern; peripheries, buffer zones and disputed regions are terms pronounced by PL leadership waa halkii uu igaarkii ****** ka lahaa, markuu shirbinayey; dhulka meesha iib geli kartiyo aqalada i siiya, idinkana obosiibada qaata aa idinku aadaaayeee smile.gif . In a nutshell, PL hadday rabto in laysla joogo, hawlo badan baa ka qabyo ahe, ee sida ay u kala muhiimsan yihiin, ha loo kala hor mariyo haddii kale dadku walaalo iyo isku wadanba waa yahaye, ee si deris wanaag ah; ha laysula noolaado oo dhibta iyo hagardaamooyinka ha layska daayo otherwise the spillover effect will be harnessed.

Finally, would you give me a satisfactory answer when President Farole says only the **** minister in the cabiney of the nominal TFG is what we got, other two are fugitives, and represent no man's land. How can such a leader make PL a better place? Unless we all are victims of those of us here on SOL who are blinded by tribalism.
