Nigerian battalion ready for deployment to Somalia

Lagos, Nigeria, 01/29 - A battalion of Nigerian soldiers is on standby for deployment to Somalia as part of an African Union Peace Support Mission in the East African nation, according to Nigerian defence spokesman, Colonel Mohammed Yussuf.

"Once the final deployment order is received, we will be on our way," Yussuf told PANA in Lagos at the weekend.

He said the troops, numbering between 770 and 1,000, had been trained in readiness for the mission, which undertake tasks aimed at providing security for the transitional federal institutions and institutional capacity building.

The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the AU recently announced it would meet to finalise plans for the deployment of the mission.

The AU had stressed the need to deploy the Mission urgently in order to build on the current momentum to stabilize the situation in Somalia.

A 13-day offensive by Ethiopian troops backing the Transitional Government of Somalia has helped dislodged the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) from the Mogadishu and other areas, and paved the way for Somalia President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed to go to the Somali capital for the first time since coming to office.

Analysts said it was urgent to deploy the Africa Peace Support Mission, in view of the fact that the Ethiopians troops had started withdrawing from Somalia, as well as the need to prevent the Islamists from regrouping and launching an insurgency.

The UN Security Council has also expressed support for the speedy deployment of the African mission

Nigeria ready to deploy troops to Somalia

21 Feb 21, 2007 - 6:38:16 AM

ABUJA, Nigeria, 02/21 - Nigeria will deploy a battalion of troops (850 soldiers) which it pledged to contribute to the African peacekeeping initiative in Somalia by the middle of April, Army Spokesman, Col. Ayo Olaniyan, said Tuesday.

"The Nigerian government`s decision to contribute troops to the Horn of Africa peace effort is consistent with her foreign policy, which has Africa as its centre-piece," Olaniyan said in the capital city of Abuja.

"This is in keeping with with her peace engendering role in the continent and the world at large," he added.

Nigeria had pledged to contribute troops towards the African Union`s 8,000 strong peacekeeping force needed to stabilise Somalia after the routing of the Union of Islamic Courts by the Ethiopian- backed forces of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia.

Olaniyan said the planned deployment would fulfil Nigeria`s pledge to contribute troops to the African Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

The battalion is drawn from the Army`s 231 Battalion in Biu, northern Borno State.

Olaniyan said the troops were currently being trained at the Nigerian Armed Forces Simulation Centre in Jaji, northern Kaduna State.

The Nigerian Battalion is expected to join nine other battalions from various African countries, who are billed to participate in the peacekeeping initiative.

It's good that they are muslim. Hopefully they come as soon as possible.

The objection to Gaal carrying aids soldiers is an unfound stereotype amongst certain somali circles. Hopefully this nullifies any worries they have.

The Yemenis would have been better because they share many of the cultural affinities with us, i.e food, dress and religion etc. Add to that the fact that they have settled in Somalia and we have settled in Yemen for well over 100 years. But I guess we work with our short comings.

Regardless, we need to move forward and this is a positive step in the right direction.

Duke - Muslim or non-Muslim, these so-called "peacekeepers" are uninvited. We are already under occupation. The arrival of anymore troops will rightly be seen as occupation upon occupation.

What happened to promises of Ethiopian withdrawal once AU forces are secured. If they are secured are their arrival imminent, how do you explain the increasing hold Ethiopian soldiers are exerting on key installations of all major towns and cities; the latest being their takeover of the police HQ in Kismaayo - Ciidamada Ethiopia oo la wareegay amaanka Kismaayo

Yes. Trying to bring Law and Order to these parts of Somalia after 16 yrs of anarchy is an occupation. Anarchists see all and any kind of government as an occupation.

Kudos to our Nigerian Muslim brothers.

Bilaal that claim that ethiopians have taken over the Town has been rubbished by the Gen Mahdi.

Secondly, The Somali parliament approved foreign peacekeepers. A majority of the 275 parliamentarians voted for the AU. The international community si behind it, Whilst the AU force will help train the thousands of troops/police in Hiraan, Banadir, Gedo, Jubbada hoose etc

The only one saying they are uninvited is Qaadisiya and the like thereof. Including your source for the Ethiopian claim, the great prophetic, truth keeper shabelle.net.

Kudos to our Nigerian Muslim brothers.

There was peace in Somalia after 16 years brought about by the "Clan courts".Some anarchists in Washington obviosuly weren't happy thus they supported a U.N resolutuion which triggered a war in Somalia.Furthermore the resololution specified that "no neighbouring countries could send troops into Somalia". Therefore according to your beloved U.N the invasion was Illegal. In other words Somalia was invaded illegally. It's simple really........

Interesting you brought this up. The majority vote you refer to is baseless for two crucial reasons; firstly, as brother Abu_Geeljire has pointed out, the invasion which preceded the vote to approve AU peacekeepers was illegal, it therefore stands to reason that this vote is also illegal; secondly, and perhaps more importantly, the 'invitation' by the TFG of the current occupiers was also illegal.

In regards to the first point, UN resolution 1725 which was passed just weeks prior to the invasion called on all neighbouring countries to refrain from interference in Somalia. This resolution was hypocrisy at its worst as there were thousands of Ethiopian troops in Baidoa at the same time as this resolution was passed.

This resolution brings me to my second point. You might recall a mass defection of parliamentarians from the TFG in mid August of 2006. This defection resulted because of the strong opposition many parliamentarians voiced against a bill tabled by Geedi and Yusuf aimed at legalising a plan to 'invite' Ethiopian military advisorsto Baidoa; as we were told then, to 'train' TFG soldiers. To cut it short, this bill never passed and led to one-third of the cabinet quiting parliament.

In the end Abdullahi Yusuf dissolved parliament and the bill never passed. The much talked about legal 'invitation' of Ethiopia at the behest of the TFG was a monstrous lie. In fact, Yusuf and Geedi unilaterally invited the Ethiopians without any legal backing. The Somali public along with the international community were duped on this one.

They are uninvited because over 90% of the Somali public believe them to be so.
