Early maps of somalia

Recommended Posts

I found all these maps of somalia in the 90's, with the exception of hargeisa - mapped in 1968. I was suprised at how much these cities have changed e.g. bosaso, hargeisa, gaalkacyo. However I was even more suprised at the map of Xamar, with all those buildings of embassys government buildings and houses.

Interesting maps. I am suprised at how much the british built hargeisa. Yet how neglected Bossaso was.

Maybe that has to do with the population being very anti foreigners in bossaso and lack of having internal partners within the city to fulfill the goals of the colonizers. Why else would the colonialists neglect such a strategic location that is located at the tip of the gulf and indian ocean meet-up corridor.

The hargeisa map is made in 1968, but it was a

map showing the plans the british HAD for

hargeisa around 1880...all those buildings

and stuff never actually came to be, because

of the darwiish movement.
