Saudi Arabia approaches Somali Conflict at the Wrong Side

Recommended Posts

Recently, King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz hosted a meeting for the Ethiopian-backed government to mark the end of the Somali reconciliation meeting held in Mogadishu. The Somali Opposition did not participate in the meeting and remained in Asmara – Eritrea.

King Abdullah invited Imbaghati leader and his lapdogs in the port city of Jeddah to settle their differences but, as matter of fact, there are no differences between the participants at the meeting as they all belong to one side - they all came aboard Ethiopian tanks in Mogadishu. The meeting ended as planned because the participants came to mislead the King and get some money.

Saudi Arabia donated thirty six million dollars to Imbaghati leader that means Saudi Arabia is building muscles of another warlord in Somalia. Saudi Arabia cannot guarantee how the money will be used. Will it be used to destroy Mogadishu and boost Ethiopian Military budget? The question remains unanswered till now! The kingdom could have supported the poor Muslims in Africa in the holy month of Ramadan instead of supporting the warlords.

Saudi Arabia failed in its attempts to stabilize the region where, it has over the years hosted many reconciliation meetings, including between the Lebanese and Afghan rival factions as well as the Iraqi Muslim clerics and earlier this year the Palestinian Fatah and Hamas factions. Majority of Somalia analysts believe that the Jeddah meeting will be another failure for the Saudi government especially after the Opposition in Asmara rejected the outcome of the meeting.

These warlords who signed the peace treaty in Jeddah – Saudi Arabia including Imbagathi leader Abdullah Yousuf and his lapdogs Geddi and unfamiliar Shaikh Aden Mohamed Nur besides other tribal chiefs – most probably from ********** tribe – on Sunday cannot bring peace and stability in Somalia as long as they came in Somalia aboard the tanks of Ethiopia. And frankly, there is no conflict between these parties who signed the peace treaty; they are members of one regime.

The Somali opposition parties are in Asmara now and are preparing to attack the Ethiopian forces in Somalia and the weak Imabagti government. If Saudi Arabia is really serious in its efforts to reconcile Somalis, they would have invited the current opposition in Somalia including the Islamic Courts Union. Saudi Arabia is neglecting the opposition but the reality is that, the Islamic Courts Union is the actual force in Somalia and they should be considered.

Shaikh Sharif was second to the Islamic Courts Union, which controlled large parts of Somalia before being ousted by Ethiopian and Somali government troops earlier this year. The opposition figures who met in Eritrea—Ethiopia’s arch-foe—had boycotted Somalia’s clan reconciliation conference held by the transitional government and backed by the international community.

The government has blamed Islamists for deadly guerrilla-style attacks in Mogadishu against government targets, Ethiopian troops and African Union peacekeepers, which happen almost daily.

It has been reported that the Imbaghati leaders signed a document to mark the end of the Somali Reconciliation Conference that concluded on the 30th of Aug 2007 in Jeddah. Majority of the Somali tribes boycotted the conference. UN reported corruption in management of the conference, and entrance tickets were sold in black market. Majority of the participants attended the meeting just to obtain little financial support. BBC Somali reported some participants refused to attend the conference after the management of the conference failed give their share of the money.

The Alliance for Reliberation of Somalia (ARS) is the latest product of the Somali opposition meeting in Asmara. Islamic Courts and its affiliates are major opposing force against the government in Mogadishu. Killings occur daily in the city where thousands of Iraq style bombs including roadside and car bombs are witnessed everyday on Mogadishu streets resulting in the death of innocent people. The country is far from being stable as long as the international community forces Somalis to accept the unpopular and rejected government.

Today, Somalia is heading towards another era of violence after 17 years of warlords conflict. The conflict in Mogadishu is taking the shape of what is currently happening in Iraq between the invading US Forces and Iraqi insurgents. Similarly, the US-backed Ethiopian forces are currently facing the same scenario because the Somalis will not heed the instructions of Melese Sanawi regime via Abdullah regime and his lapdogs in Somalia.

Old mistakes of the kingdom

In 1988, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia blindly supported former dictator Mohammed Siyad Barre in his fight against Northern Somalis. The kingdom supplied hundreds of pickup cars (Toyota Land Cruisers) to the Somali Army in order to continue the genocide in North of Somalia. Siyad Bare misled the kingdom by saying that “I am fighting against the militia in Hargiesa, Burco and Berbera.” Unfortunately, the Saudis financially supported him and provided him with pickup cars without verifying the reality of his claims. On the other hand, Siyad Bare used the money and pickup cars to kill the innocent people in north Somalia – pickup cars were used as military vehicles against innocent people in Somalia.

The kingdom is following its old and wrong method of supporting unscrupulous individuals in Somalia and the kingdom only wants to see the united Somalia to safeguard its interest in the region regardless of the injustice and inequality prevalent in the current the regime. Today, Imbaghati leader Abdullah Yousuf is exerting tremendous efforts to get money from the kingdom using the old method of misleading the kingdom.

My final word:

Every Somali community should look after its interest just like the Republic of Somaliland. Somaliland saved its people and children and its citizens now enjoy full access to social services, free education and healthcare unlike the sufferings in Somalia. The problem of Somalia is like cancer – one needs to cut off the effected areas from other the parts of the body. Somalia, today, needs to secure democratic areas like Somaliland by recognizing it as an independent nation, or else, the whole Somalia communities will end up in big trouble.
