Where is Somalia/somalis heading?

Recommended Posts

Coloow

I have been pondering the question of "what is so good about somalis"? What are we good at? What will happen if all somalis are wiped out? will the world be different?

It seems that (there are exceptions of course) we are at the lowest strata of any measurable issue. Our so called "educated" - whatever that term means- appear to be reinforcing the widely held view that they are no better than the waranles. Even on these boards, you might be decieved that some somalis have exhaled in their education- only to find that they are bearers of tribalism, regionalism, deciet and what have you. The political section in particular has become the epicenter of this disease; Even the so called owners and the moderators are a bunch of trbalists who are quick to edit or tolerate if the views posted are against (or in line with) those held by their tribe.

Everywhere you go in the diaspora; London, Copenhavn, stockholm, Oslo, Toronto, DC, Ohio you will find the same kind of mentality that had forced us into exile; that has made us a laughing stock.

On university campus, the bacon of intellectual and critical thinking, the somali is still the same; a figure driven by tribalism.

The somali man or woman lacks the ability to think independently; the capacity to reason as an indivdual;

It seems if you ask a somali sheikh, intellectual a question he/she delivers the opinion of the tribe.

The so called "wadaads" have also failed us; in the good old days, a religious scholar used to start by teaching ; macalin; then becomes xir and finally become a sheikh- a wiseman whose religious and social guidances was based on ensuring social cohesion, justice and balanced wisdom.

Our new breed of sheikhs/wadaads are "calooshood" u shaqeystayaal who ride with the tide; their discourse is not based on faith or truths but on a strategy to be called "sheikh i dheha". If you think I am making this up, view a video by any of the new video-preachers.

Before every warlord, there is a sheikh that leads the prayer; At the guest of honour table of qabil-parliament, there is always a sheikh. When these evilmen are confronted it is not unsual for them to invoke; ilaahey warkiisa miyaad beeneeneysaa?

Back to the country known as somalia;

Some facts; poor nation; no resources; humancapital has been schooled in the notion that a government is the solution and provider; Its citizens are either warlords, religious zealots, welfare wackos, educated in the school of superficial and istustus.

It seems that every somali wants to rule; not to be ruled; taxation an important aspect of nationhood is out of the question for somalis; never ending peace conferences have become a feature of our people- and much more.

Today, the picture of the somali in the diaspora is one of moral decay (some of these are universal and could be deduced to poverty); it is not unusual to see a somali have the outfit of islam emboided but the actions are not.

I know that some of you might not agree to the above and mention entrepreneurial spiritism that exists; that the majority are still good decent peace loving; that you are doing good in the US, Canda, UK etc! But, I challenge thee;

Contemporary pseudourbanists are in a sea of lie, an ocean of boasting about nothing.

Where are we heading? How shall we overcome the moral , societal and political decay of our people?

Contributions needed.

Marqaan weyne;

That is a simplified answer soo ma aha sxb? sida magaceyga ka cad wadaad ma ihi ee waxaan ahay waranle :)ee laakin waxaay ila tahay inaan waxbedeli karno.

We could still affect the path our destiny- right?

Peace is not the issue bro; you could have all the peace on earth but if you don't have citizens willing to sacrifice; willing to work; willing to provide support then mere peace is nothing.

Waxaan dhowaan gaaray Hargeisa bro; I was positively suprised; peace prevails, there is some development taking place;

But the underlying issues of tribalism, passivity and af minshaarism is ripe.

I gave a simplified answer, because the question was so broad sxb. yet, it is indeed a question every somali needs to ask one self. WE CAN MOST DEFINITLY CHANGE OUR DESTINY. what we need is collective effort, especially by all the somali's living in qurbaha. we need awareness bro. believe it or not, many ppl claim to know whats goin on in somalia, BUT ONLY A FEW DO. therefore, AWARENESS is the first step.

Salaams,

I think your question is of utmost validity.

my answer somalia is headed where Allah wills first of all. but, secondly no one else but we ( somalis) only are ultimatly responsible for rescuing that beatiful and mistrated land.

That is an important question indeed RB. I think we as Somalis first and foremost need to put matters of emotions like the qabiil and Islam on the side and think rationally. Because, in my opinion, responses such as "we are headed where allah swt has destined us" and "we all headed to akhiro", albeit might be true, do not contribute anything to the push forward because of the lack of any critical and insightful thought.

If this particular thread is to come up with a useful and reasonable outcome then we have to leave matters that drive people's emotions in other sections of SOL and get together as Somalis first and foremost... everything else comes second.

Mentioning these emotive matters will cause us to go around in circles as I have noticed on this website.

Hello somaliaonline peeps!

Frantz Fanon says that 'Violence is man recreating himself'. I genuinely believe that Somalis are merely recreating themselves, and sooner or later will find what works for them, and inshaAllah learn play the game of international relations better in future.

They came from being nomads with no governance other than that of clan, to a centralised system of governance. Its no wonder they have felt no ownership over the Somali achievements of the 60's and 70's coz they believed 'reer hebel invented this' and 'reer hebel want to over-throw reer hebel'. They we'rent ready for a formal system of governance, and that of Arabised Islamic governance is just as pointless and alien as socialism was in the Siyaad Barre period as they do not fit in with Somali culture.

The future does actually lie in these qabiil fiefdoms such as Puntland and Somaliland, it could create competition between areas and also the sense of ownership over any achievements. Due to their percieved lack of ownership, they felt no need to preserve anything. We all know Somalis only do things for faan and kibir, we should learn to exploit that. Only problem is that we will need to include the 0.5's(insulting term!) as much as possible in because they are the most able to think outside of the box, and less likely to care about who stole whos camel 2 centuries ago.

"They overlook the fact that democracy is incompatible with the egalitarian character of Somali society. Somalis strongly oppose being divided into two political groups, those that rule and those that are ruled. And that is precisely what democracy does."

Excellent introduction! I shall read it when I can find it, thank you aliamos.

I find his vision is not dissimilar from mine, Africa as a whole has had a historical, systematic eradication and undermining of its traditional forms of legislature. I dislike it when people write about how Europe developed/discarded certain practices in favour of others etc because Europe and Africa may as well be on different planets where cultures/histories are concerned. We had Kings and Sultans, but they did not rule the entire country. they were always in charge of certain areas where their clans were the majority.

The only problem, is again; how do we get the minority clans involved further in the democratic process? One member of a minority clan was saying that even the name 'Somalia' needed to be changed because of its chauvinistic nod to the ancestor of the majority clans. I dont disagree, these majority clans have far too much influence and it is detrimental to Somalia's future if we ignore the more rational objective voices in the country and diaspora.

Do you know of any professors/authors/commentators from these clans? All Somalis need to get re/acquainted with their views.

Guys you are making good points. Sincerely I think we are headed where no other nation/people in modern history has ever headed. We are going to be the scum of this earth (if we are not already); we are going to be known as a nation in which even those of us who are educated cannot excercise their brains but rely alot on tribalism .

Already the signs are out there.

The killer disease is called tribalism; how can a rational person believe in this nonsense? You may find a religious entrepreneur, the so called intellectual (village intellectual) give this disease their approval by claiming for instance; ilaahey baa yiri; tribe/tribalism is an important institution etc.

We have to free ourselves from the bondage of tribalism. Just as Europe did in the 17th century when people started questioning christianity, we need people clever and bold enough to say stop feeding us the nonsense about tribalism.

Maxaa tiri the qabiil fiefdoms have no future- blv you me- I have been to them and there is little that is different between them and many other semi-fiefdoms in somalia.

It is safe to say 'Somalis'don't know where they are heading to . This has to do with soci-culture of the Somalis, we are the worest of the worestd;

Look we are proud with the all bad things, killings, looting, deceiving and the worest destroying your nation is just some thing common with the so call somalis. The mother of all these bad cultures is 'clanish faith'.

Proposed solution;

abandon the name 'Somalis' and integrate with other ethnic groups. Somalis are good when ruled by others, as now is widespread phenomina. Second

never talk what we can not acheive; Somali wayn. Nin walba dadkiisa kale dhinaca ha ka raaco

The last point, SOMALIA FOR SALE; let us sale the country not with the cheapest price but competitive price by allowing others to takeover. These are the realy issue we need to talk not superficials.

Total Re-engineering of the race and its way of thinking needs to change. Lets pray to Allah to guide us to the best possible route. And lets hope all the gullible leaders find their morals and look in the mirror.
