Freedom or Equality? choose

Freedom or Equality?

This is not an easy motion to debate on. Thus, this piece of writing will mention, discuss and bring forward the irrationality of choosing either freedom over equality or visa versa, without having a harmonious counterbalance between the two factors, implemented by a regulatory body. It will also include examples of countries which "total freedom" or "total equality” is in practice, where the search for total freedom led to total anarchy, or the pursuit for total equality curtailed the freedom in all areas of life. This short writing will be concluded with a personal view.

The idea of choosing either one of these two factors will somehow seems vague. Equality without freedom is suffering and monotony (communism) whereas freedom without equality results anarchism/Libertarianism.

There may not be any country in the world that lives under anarchy except Somalia. In Somalia's case, one can claim that there is an existence of total freedom without any sort of equality in place. Somalia practiced "scientific-socialism" of Karl Marx during the years of Siad Bare's dictatorship. The concept of scientific-socialism brought about restrictions upon personal, economical and political freedoms. All citizens were to be treated equally in regard to Karl Max's ideology, but equality in that sense was incompatible with the situation the country was in.

A struggle for freedom started to take form just after 5 years of scientific socialism, opposing the total equality with which the state imposed upon it is citizens. And in 1990, after many years of rebellion, the citizens were successful to overthrow the "Scientific-Socialism" based government but unfortunately could not replace it with a fair government. Instead Somalia's quest for total freedom became worse than total equality.

Equality in freedom can mostly be seen in democratic countries where, citizens are able to politically elect their leaders, express their views and economically have an equal opportunity, though that extent of freedom and equality is restricted by a state regulation.

As humans naturally, we believe that it is rather better to be free than not to be free, and in some cases we don't consider equality to be of great worth. One good example that proofs that theory true is, the African slaves in the western world, who fought and campaigned to be freed from slavery and to see slavery business abolished all together. They were struggling to be free, without having in mind that equality is indeed necessary in their struggle. As we know they were later freed from being slaves and regarded as freemen and women, but the main obstacle that hindered their progress in integrating into their local societies was segregation. They were considered alien, regarded different, and denied equal opportunity. And that brought the need to again campaign for equality in all areas of life; the right to be treated equally, to be employed equally and to be accepted as part and parcel of the society.

In conclusion, although it may not sound reasonable to choose one over the other, it is obvious that one can live without a regulation from the top. And if Adam and Eve were let loose freely into this world then, would it not be easy to be free from any regulation than suffer under a heavy regulation? It is much easier to be free than not to be free. It is better to be free ---------------------

That was my choice. How about you?

hey dude interesting topic and u rite it is not one that can be answered with few words or what not, but before i bore u to death i guess i should start saying and quickly too smile.gif

there is nothing called absoulate freedom, either goverment, society, religion, and individual principles put restrictions on freedoms. as to equality now, in the eyes of allah we are but will never be in the eyes of other human beings because again we have developed systems, cultures, ideologies that creates inferiorties and inequality between people. In this country i think that their freedom might seem great on the outside, but not so can be seen so even looking at their election system where the electoral colleges choices the president not the ppl themselves directly. And also the canidats that are present they are supported by ppl that got money and therefore an interest of their own to protect so who do u think that elected officials would try to help or make sure that their needs are taken care of i tell it ain't the average american that's who not. But to make the story more shorter, i personally would achieve as human being both freedom and equality if i lived in an island all by myself that's all, there is no middle ground in my opinion nor can one exit without the other so therefore i don't believe a decision of which one need to be made here.

that's more than my 1 1/2 cents on this topic. :D

Freedom ofcoz. It doesn't matter wether i'd be equal to Tom ..Dick or Harry coz Allaah gave me equality in his own way. Being equal in the human quality doesn't have a meaning at all.

So ..me choose ...freeeedom ....freedom

Sorry JAMAL SXB. I disagree with u, i would choose EQUALITY, because as the SCORPION SIS. said there's no absoulate freedom, neither from ALLAH'S regulation nor from HUMAN'S regulation.

So, we can live with regulations as long as the regulations adopt to whole society equally.

Life with absoulate freedom means chaos, it should be with restrictions sxb, but for ALL.

Muraad abaa, I think equality only comes after you get freedom. The slaves which the author of this thread mentioned first fought for freedom and only then did they start thinking of equality. Coz a slave cannot be equal with his master unless he is free right? So that is my explanation.

nuune

the bottom line:choose one of them and state the reasons.

i go for freedom,am free, free for ever,i say that because there is nothing which are in comparison with freedom, what will i do with equality,do i have to go there and say:iam equal to this and that!!

From Scorpion sista to nuune,

First of all, Freedom and Equality are like you both limps, if one leg is hurt the other can't walk proberly. So, By choosing one from the other is not practicle but if it becomes one choice you have to make between life and death then, it wont be a bad idea to have one choice that you feel comfortable with. Equality under a freedomless state is slavery. And freedom without regulations and equality is anarchy and violence. So, the main reason why i chose to be free rather than to be equal was becouse, incase i die, I want to die a free man.

As Jamal said, where there's a freedoom, equality is there too...eg.African Americans were fighting for freedom inorder to be equal to the rest of (white)americans.

There4 freedom comes b4 equality.

Nuune, I barely stated the consequences that are associated with both factors, it isn't about criticism my friend, it is about carefully choosing one option knowing that it will affect your livelyhood greatly. Just like you did, I chose Freedom not Equality, and there you and me are in the same category, can't you see? Stating the reasons why one choses one factor over another doesn't contribute to criticising anyone. Everyone has a choice.

Jamaal sxb. i understand ur argument, and i know there would be no equality unless there's a freedom.

we can say in summary: where there's a freedom there COULD be equality, but where there's an equality there SHOULD be freedom.

Mr. kritikal-mind asks us to choose one, so if we choose equality we killed one stone to two birds, because we've chosen the top one which guarantees us the bottom one too.

So, always ask the top one to get both or at least (if the person u asking is greedy) to get the bottom one.

Finally, jamaal sxb, i was watching yesterday an arabic progamme about Algerias freedom fighting which 1.5 million algerians lost their life, and I asked myself if those Martyrs would know how their children would be treated after the liberation by fellow Algrians, would they die for freedom and i concluded NO , because their children are either behind bars because of their opposition to the government or left the country or live with humiliation and daily abuse of their rights. The only rescue is to be GUULWADE DAACAD U AH DAWLADDA.

So what we benefitted from the freedom which our fathers and grandfathers fought for it. NOTHING but humiliation.

SO, SXB JAMAAL EQUAL TREATMENT TO ALL IS THE MOST IMPORTANT. AND THAT'S WHY WE'RE HERE, WE CANN'T SAY OUR COUNTRY IS UNDER COLONIAL CONTROL, WE ESCAPED FROM OUR FELLOW SOMALIS, OUR COUNTRY IS FREE BUT FREEDOM WITHOUT JUSTICE (EQUALITY) IS NOTHING AND SOMETIMES WORSE THAN THE COLONIALISM.

FREEDOM WITHOUT EQUALITY IS IN THE MOST THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES.

SOME EXTENT OF FREEDOM WITH SOME EXTENT OF EQUALITY IS IN THE WEST.

FULL EXTENT OF FREEDOM AND FULL EXTENT OF EQUALITY WERE THE ERA OF KHULUFAAUL RAASHIDIIN (INCLUDING CUMAR BIN CABDULCASIIS)AND AFTER THEM WITH DIFFERENT EXTENT.

I will give examples in my next post inshaallaah.

Hmm..freedom or equality? nuh...can't do it!!

Well, these two are the two sides of the same coin! This should be clear to all of us. In a utopia where every soul gets what he/she wishes for, there are no difference between the two anyway. Back to earth though! you may state your choice to an authority that has the power to deny you both of them or grant you one as it sees fit.

In the interest of all of us nomads let me enlighten u about Kritikal_Mind's tautology.

Ali is free under the eyes of whoever!

But Ali is unequal to Jamal under the same authority cuz Jamal is a from nobel class like blue blood and what not (House of lords in Egland!!) On the other hand Scorpion is equal to Nuune but she is not free to wear her hijab in her college cuz the law says that's forbiden (Turkey??). Where does this lead us??

For the nomads who chose equality if u meant equal to everyone under that system including those who call the shots. That to me means that you are free as well cuz u may be able to change the rules if you are equal to have same say on the matter on hand.

On the same token if you are free to run for public office then you are equal to those who are running for the same seat.

Hmm..sound too simplistic if so then this is what you need to factor in if u are about to scream and say but look America...

Aha! Now plug power, wealth, education, and majority(demographic sense) in that equation and it all comes together.

Kritikal_Mind need to have tea and flip the pages of whatever philosophy or sociology book he is assigned to and find better challenge for him and us, the nomads...lol just a joke

Should we then say both are unalienable right in which no one would dare to grant or deny our right to these gifts from Allah.

I think that will do it! Just a thought.

Ladies and Gentlemen read the article below and tell me what you all think.

"One of the great battles being waged today, though you don't realize it, is

the battle between freedom and equality.

There are several great forces attacking freedom and liberty today. One battle

is being waged in the name of security, the other in the name of equality.

We're not talking about equality under the law here. The idea of freedom and

personal liberty is absolutely compatible with the concept of equality before

the law. We talking about substantive equality. Equality of results, not

equality of opportunity.

When a person sees someone with more than they have; a nicer car, nicer home,

better vacations, nicer clothes; they can accept the fact that the other

person may have worked harder and smarter and made better choices; the choice

to pay more attention to education, for instance. Or that person may view it

as a question of equality .. of social justice, as the leftist socialist

radicals like to phrase it. Its just not right that that other person has

more than you do. Where is the justice in that? You should have just as nice

a car as that other person, just as nice a home and you should be able to

travel to all of the other places that person can. After all, that's what

equality is all about, isn't it?

Deal with it. In a free society .. some will have more, some a lot more. Some

will have less, some a lot less. You just cannot have freedom and equality.

Substantive equality is pure poison to individual freedom. American society

is just going to have to chose one or the other. Problem is, envy and

jealousy being what it is, the American people would probably chose

substantive equality over freedom even though it might mean that they have

somewhat less material comfort or luxury in their own lives if it would just

take from the evil, hated rich all of the luxuries that they enjoy." By Dane Basch
