An in-depth Documentary about Somaliland

Recommended Posts

Here is an interesting interview taken in 1994 in Djibouti. A master orator.

His answer to the question about "What if the Somali People made you their President"  youtube timestamp 23 minutes, shows how he is head and shoulders above. You cannot slide a gotcha question to a master like late AUN Egal.

His answer is still relevant to this very day. The day AMISOM leaves South Somalia, is the day a second round of civil war ensues.

Egal aun was not the kind of leader to sell out the interest, will and aspirations of the people who elected for greed and blind ambitions for power. His history and track record attest to that.

Having said that, you might have missed some other part and comments he makes y which is even more relevant today. you might want to listen to the parts in which he warns for Somaliland (government) not to behave in the same ways as the former Somalia did which Somaliland wants to separate from, otherwise it would defeat the purpose.

And also the parts in which he states that recognition is not simply given as gift because of good behaviour or because you happen to want it, but it’s based purely on interest.

And you might also want do some further homework on Egal’s effort towards end of 90’s to reconcile parties in Somalia and was instrumental in conceiving the Arteh Conference and TNG government, as he understood that civil war in Somalia was not in the interest of Somaliland, whereas some narrow minded folks might belief the contrary, as if Somaliland is an peninsula in a ocean only neighbouring Djibouti but unconnected and unaffected by the perils of Somalia.

Although you can travel from one corner of Somaliland to the other side, you may still not come back alive or in one piece.

The mines that were planted by the Somalia dictator in the remotest of areas and off roads still harm many people. There are area that you are just not going to risk going or else.

The deadliest roads takes into account one of the most mined areas in Somaliland, which is the Gabiley region.

The documentary is from 2010.

Khadafi

Another clan-obsessed documentary about three city states, fuufu-lands, bubu-lands call them what ever you want. Lets be honest to each other. Its a tribal enititey trying to to be seperate while other somali tribes in somaliland do not even agree with them. Nobody is dumb. The only thing I could say to to them as a southerner is that I hail them for the peace they have.

  • Haha - That was funny. You made me laugh! 1

Another gem from late SL President. This time, he is in Djibouti invited by Djibouti's President to attend as an observer and mediator to a Conference held in Djibouti for the warring clans of Somalia.

Just pay attention how many times he puts that so called journalist in his place, effortlessly.

It took South Somalia's leaders 30 years to come to the same conclusions that Somaliland's leaders reached back then.

It just shows how the two sides are totally different. Somalilanders are realists, we do not go around the bushes to deal with issues - we face it head first. Whereas the Southerners like to be Dined/Wined and still they will just play on the woodworks and never go down to the real tough issues.

In 1992, the US with all its might and along with the UN which came in the back of a collapsed USSR and they saw themselves as the sole leadership of the globe - they descended in Hargeisa and demanded for the UNSOM to deploy its troops to Berbera. The then SL leadership bluntly refused. The documents about how these engagements can be found in the archives of the United Nations Library and Congress Library.

Another episode of why Somaliland's leadership is different happened in 2020. Here we have Abiy Ahmed who just received Nobel Prize and had all the Western countries queue up for him. Farmaajo tries to use this superstar Abiy Ahmed to pressure Somaliland. Once again, Somaliland tells Abiy Ahmed to get lost.

Exactly 1 year later, Abiy Ahmed comes to the realisation that Somaliland is different and normalised relationship with Hargeisa.

One of the other remarkable historic events also was when Somaliland rejected the Chinese overtures over Taiwan. Somaliland rejected it and bluntly told the Chinese that Life is not all about money. Principles trump cheap dollars.

These tough principles decisions that Somalilanders have reached at very critical times when the choice was tough, have earned Somaliland a lot of respect from key countries including US itself.

  • Thanks 1
