Federal authorities expected to erect 'non-scalable' fence around White House

Federal authorities are expected to put back into place a "non-scalable" fence around the entire perimeter of the White House on Monday as law enforcement and other agencies prepare for possible protests surrounding the election, a source with knowledge of the matter confirmed to CNN.

The fence, the same type that was put up during protests this summer, will encompass the Ellipse and Lafayette Square. It will go down 15th Street to Constitution Avenue and then over to 17th Street. The fence will then run up to H Street and across by Lafayette, and then come down 15th Street, the source said.

NBC News was first to report the new fencing. The Secret Service did not respond to a request for comment.

The extra layer of security marks the most high-profile example to date of authorities preparing for unrest following this year's election, particularly if there is no clear winner come November 4.

As CNN previously reported, the immediate perimeters around the White House have already been largely blocked off to the public this year for a range of reasons, from construction on the White House gate, to protests and looting that occurred in downtown Washington in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May.

Lafayette Park, across the street from the north side of the White House and a popular protest gathering spot, had also largely been fenced-in since police aggressively moved in on protesters alongside it in July.

Washington, DC, Metro Police Chief Peter Newsham warned the District's City Council last month there was wide expectation of some type of civil unrest following the election. And many businesses in the downtown DC area in the proximity of the White House have boarded up doors and windows in the last couple of days in anticipation of possible protests.

During this past summer, some businesses saw their windows smashed and other property damaged by protesters.

But DC Metro police have been preparing its officers for well over a year, as it does ahead of every general election, ensuring that they are prepared to handle everything from civil disturbance to crowd control to potential disruptions to metro transit, Patrick Burke, executive director of the Washington, DC, Police Foundation, previously told CNN.

Police have also been working with intelligence officials to ensure the security of Washington, DC's airspace in the event of an attack from above, Burke added, as they routinely do when preparing for moments of heightened anxiety.

Why Somalis are closely watching the US elections

Just as people across the United States will be waiting eagerly for the results of Tuesday’s voting, thousands of kilometres away, on the far eastern corner of Africa, Somalis will also be closely watching the hard-fought matchup between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

It hardly comes as a surprise. A country of some 15 million people, Somalia has for decades felt the impact of US policies – both directly and indirectly.

“Ever since Somalia got independence in 1960, America and its leaders have tried to have a strong foothold in the country,” said Hassan Sheikh Ali, a lecturer of international relations at Somali National University.

The main reason? Somalia’s “strategic location”.

Bounded by the Indian Ocean to the east and the Gulf of Aden to the north, the Horn of Africa country occupies a significant geopolitical position along major trade routes. Up to 30,000 ships, carrying goods from crude oil to iron ore, pass annually through the Gulf of Aden, a key transit zone for maritime traffic between the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

“America is in Somalia to protect its commercial interest,” said Hassan.

The US’s engagement in Somalia remained steadfast throughout the Cold War when it competed with the Soviet Union for influence and control. “Somalia first sided with the West, then the USSR, before switching sides yet again in the 1980s and going with the West,” said Hassan.

In the late 1980s, Washington deployed military aid and trainers to stem the tide of a rebellion threatening the government of autocratic ruler Siad Barre.

But in 1991, after 21 years in power, Siad was overthrown by rival clan militias. As fighters ransacked the country, the US closed its embassy in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, and watched from afar as chaos reigned.

With a permanent resident card, it usually takes from two and half to three years. For Soomaalida iska dhiibo gudaha marka la qaabilo, it would take around five and half to six years.

Che, Mareykanka waaka quusanoysaa, I see. I don't blame you. I am glad I made my move back in 1996 as a boy - all thanks to my sister. Otherwise maanta walwal iyo walbahaar baas jiri lahaa, it is really distressing how Mareykanka is collapsing before our eyes.

It is also inconceivable too that it takes a voter hours in line-up to vote simply. Here, it is ten minutes maximum, usually five.

The Democratic Party is very corrupt. What would a Hindu/black womani from California bring to the party in terms electoral votes. They kept talking about having a woman vice presidential candidates. The black people are 13% of the American electorate. If Biden had picked a white deputy from Georgia , North Carolina or  Pennsylvania things could have Been different.
Biden is Catholic and he got a Hindu Vice President. We’re are the largest Christian group in America—The Baptists?

Obama was main stream Baptists. It is very strange to pick  tor select as Vice President for someone who failed to even get 5% of the vote during the  Democratic Party primary.

Furthermore, the polling business has collapsed again just like 2016. Two days ago they Biden up 15% in Wisconsin. Exit polls show that Trump got 4% more  black man voted for him than 2016. Also you can’t judge the attitude of the American people by the pronouncements of CNN which eats breakfast , lunch and dinner for Trump

Yes corrupt but the choice is not his but extremely complex choice,  black  n Hispanics may be less, but it is them you need to win elections, look at Texas n Florida, and many states, white are core, set to either Democratic or Republican.
