Learning Alif May

Recommended Posts

The alphabet used for writing Maay language is the same as the international Roman alphabet, with letters chosen to represent the Maay phones (sound structure). It also uses digraphs i.e. a sequence of two letters to represent single sounds. The Maay alphabet has five primary vowels: a, e, i, o, u, and one semi-vowel ( Y ) and twenty four consonants.

(1.00) Consonants:

B P T J JH D TH R S SH DH G GH F Q K L M N NG W H Y Y’

(1.01) Vowels:

Maay has two major categories of vowels: short and long according to the position they occupy in the word in which they are located. Long vowels are spelled as double vowels. They are pronounced exactly like short vowels except that they are longer:

A E I O U

AA EE II OO UU

Che

I attended one of those University learn and lunch long time when I was a smelly student. The lecturer was a Somali professor who specializes in different Somali dialects. If my memory serves me right I think he is big in researching this sort of linguistics. I learn that not all the Somalis speak the same language. His name is Mohamed Mukhatar of Savannah state University.

^We have to dethrone marka till you pick some May May. I think MMA is only the May speaker on these boards, atleast that I know of. It's unfortunate the Somali government only promoted Maxaa tiri as the standard Somali language.

Blessed

Af May is a language. It's unfortunately designated as a dialect due to sociopolitics...

I would love to learn it, it sounds cute.

Che, I have never seen a written Maay language before. One thing though, it's hard to believe that letter "p" is in the Somali language.

Maay iyo Maxaa tiri maryooleey, beabol uu wada guraayaan :D
