They (northern admin) should have been grateful to the Somali government.  Lo and behold,  their withdrawal symptoms clouded their minds.

Somali airspace is the responsibility of the Somali government.  Capiche?

Kenyan traders cry foul after Somalia bars khat

Miraa traders in Kenya are up in arms after Somalia turned back an aircraft that was delivering 13.6 tonnes of khat to Hargeisa, the capital of the breakaway Somaliland region.

Nyambene Miraa Traders Association (Nyamita) chairman Kimathi Munjuri said the cargo plane was turned back on Saturday despite having received clearance to leave Nairobi and deliver the highly prized commodity to Hargeisa.

Hargeisa, a major consumer of Ethiopian khat, is experiencing a shortage of the stimulant due to ethnic unrest that has hit Ethiopia’s expansive Oromia region for the last five days.

Flight 5YMSA, which had overflight and landing clearance from Somaliland Civil Aviation and Airports Authority, turned back and landed at Wajir International Airport.

According to Somalia based news sites, the cargo plane was denied entry due to the country’s air travel restrictions in a bid to contain the spread of Covid-19.

Meru miraa traders say Somalia flights ban ruining their business

Farmers who grow miraa varieties popular with the export market have decried harsh economic times following the suspension of international cargo flights into Somalia amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The farmers from lower lying parts of the Nyambene ranges In Meru County, particularly in Karama, Athiru, Kanjoo among others grow the ‘Grade’ or ‘Kiza’ variety which is exclusively meant for the Somalia market.

According to the farmers, the variety is preferred for export due to its succulent trait that enables it to remain fresh after several hours of transportation.

The variety is largely grown under irrigation.

Led by Nyambene Miraa Sacco Chairman Moses Lichoro, the farmers from Kabuitu in Igembe Central called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to engage his Somalia counterpart Mohamed Abdullahi for the resumption of cargo flights.

Mr Lichoro said farmers have run out of their savings after the ban, which is now in the third month, cut off their income.

He said since their miraa variety has no market locally, they have been forced to prune their trees and occasionally sell small amounts to local traders.

“We have drained our savings and now many farmers cannot afford a meal because we have nowhere to sell our miraa. The situation is dire and the President should move with speed to reopen the economy and engage our neighbours to allow cargo flights,” Mr Lichoro said.

He said more than 50 workers were being engaged on his miraa farms daily before Covid-19 shut the economy.

“Before the Covid-19 shutdown was declared, I would sell miraa worth more than Sh3 million every month. Over 50 people would earn wages from my farms but many of them are now jobless. Some of them are still relying on me for their daily subsistence. Life is too hard for us,” he said.

SALES DOWN

Mr Bernard Mwiti, a farmer, said he was making Sh500,000 in miraa sales three months ago but now he can hardly get Sh50,000.

Ms Felicity Makena, another farmer, said the closure of the Somalia airspace has had a major negative effect on the economy in miraa growing areas.

“We laud the President for the law that recognised miraa as a cash crop. Miraa is the primary source of income in Kabuitu but without a market, we will suffer. The President should move with speed to save the situation,” Ms Makena said.

According to Mr Lichoro, Nyambene Miraa Sacco, which has 1,200 members, has hit its lending limit due to increased borrowing from cash-strapped farmers.

Somalia closed its airspace and banned cargo flights apart from medical supplies, late March after recording its first Covid-19 case.

The trade with Somalia was further complicated by suspension of local flights in the neighbouring country.

Early June, the Somali government reportedly revoked the licences of two airlines for smuggling in miraa in the guise of medical supplies, as traders strived to beat the Covid-19 restrictions.

According to Nyambene Miraa Traders Association, Somalia takes in about 50 tonnes of miraa daily valued at about Sh100 million during the peak season.

Miraa traders decry denial of entry to Hargeisa-bound plane

Miraa traders in the country are up in arms after Somalia turned back an aircraft transporting 13.6 tonnes of khat to Hargeisa, the capital of the breakaway Somaliland region.

Nyambene Miraa Traders Association (Nyamita) Chairman Kimathi Munjuri said the plane was turned back on Saturday, despite having been cleared to make the trip.

Mr Munjuri said the traders would lose Sh8 million if the khat is not delivered on time.

“The miraa is valued at about Sh3 million, Sh2.5 million goes to transport and there are other logistical costs which cannot be refunded. We had approvals from the Somaliland Civil Aviation Authority and everything was going on well, until the aircraft entered Somalia’s airspace. The pilot was told that he was carrying illegal cargo,” Mr Munjuri said.

Mr Munjuri complained about the slow pace at which the Foreign Affairs was addressing the trade stalemate with Somaliland.

“We have even been trying to have the Somalia border reopened to facilitate trade but nothing seems to be moving. The ministries of Trade and Agriculture have been engaging the Foreign Affairs on various issues. All miraa trade issues seem to be stuck at Foreign Affairs,” he said.

The move by Somalia was reportedly received with protests in Hargeisa by expectant miraa chewers.

Hargeisa, a major consumer of Ethiopian khat, is experiencing a shortage of the stimulant due to ethnic unrest in the Oromia region for the last five days.

According to Somalia-based news sites, the plane was denied entry due to the country’s air travel restrictions in a bid to contain the spread of Covid-19.

Somalia banned miraa imports three months ago to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Despite Somaliland declaring unilateral independence in 1991, the issue of air traffic control is yet to be agreed on between Mogadishu and Hargeisa.

ENGAGED IN TALKS

The semi-autonomous state is currently engaged in talks with Somalia, mediated by Djibouti, to resolve long-standing differences.

Air space control is one of the issues Somaliland wants solved in the talks that resumed late last month in Djibouti.

Somaliland, withdrew all Covid-19 restrictions, including those on public gatherings and international flights, on June 23.

The incident came a day after a delegation of Kenyan investors and government officials led by Suna East MP and National Assembly Minority Whip Junet Mohammed held talks with Somaliland President Muse Bihi at Hargeisa.

In September 2017, Kenyan miraa traders also cashed in on khat shortage in Somaliland following disruption of the business by conflicts in Ethiopia’s Oromia and Somali regions.

Why is Farmaajo blocking the Khat to the north? What’s the reason? Did the plane violate any laws? Or is this merely Farmaajo’s attempts at arm twisting Muuse Handaraab?

As there is political and social instability these days in the Oromia region where the Ethiopian jaad originates, the jaad traders (drug dealers) in Hargeisa went to Kenya to fill the massive shortfall in their supply, hence the plane load of that despicable thing coming from Kenya. Whatever Farmaajo's intentions in stopping this cargo plane I am genuinely grateful that he did it.

So can one conclude that this is simply a Farmaajo ploy of safeguarding Abiy’s/ Oromo’s Khat business monopoly in the north of Somalia?

Also to MMA & others who act as if the Farmaajo administration is doing a great job fighting the consumption of Khat in the country, why is it that only Khat from Kenya is being sanctioned  and not the Khat being imported from Ethiopia?

Are you sure? Also is this being done under the pretext of preventing COVID-19, or is this a deliberate policy of limiting the Khat trade throughout Somalia?
