what would you do?

Greetings everyone: May peace of Allah be upon you all.

If you could go home, and home being somalia, what would you do? Where in Somalia would you go? Who would you contact first? What would you take with you from here?

It is a fact that some of us will never have the chance to go back, whether through free will or not. I pray Insha Allah that someday, we will have to chance to visit our country, or even go back and live there. I certianly tend to return for good, as soon as I can see some progress towards peace. I miss everything about home, and my memory is lessing by the day. This is devastating to me. I guess being here, out in the west has taught me that, there is nothing better than a land that screams your name.

peace

salaams,

I have forgotten names and certain places, cos i never really went beyond our neighborhood, but i remember the atmosphere. The sense of community, and more importantly, the sense of belonging.

I don't know about others here, but for most there are many painful memories back home. It is better to forget the place and all the bad things that happened there, according to many people that i know.

But i hope to god that we can go back, so that our children don't have to feel foreigners in their places of birth. I wouldn't want my own children to be branded second generation refugees or citizens.

I don't really know how it will work out, but i hope to see my country in peace time. The thing that scares me the most is that things won't be as i remembered them. Too many faces have disappeared.

lol @ personal Alarm!

I wonder who would come running to your rescue in Somalia if you were getting attacked?! My guess is it would be the police who were attacking you in the first place.

I definitely plan to go back to Somalia; I should start saving I guess. I want to have a nice house out there with all the essentials and I’d probably get by shopping shipped over, I better have Internet access at home too, so I can shop online…lol.

I would love to set up a biomedical lab in Somalia so that they can investigate and properly diagnose patients from the Somali hospitals. I realised the need for this when I first went to Somalia and found that their haematology department was so bad! They actually wrongly diagnosed a close relative of mine with malaria, which of course is every serious! And it made me wonder what other things they’ve done and the death toll caused by them prescribing the wrong medication.

Obviously this isn’t something that’ll happen over night but it would be great if other students or people working in other specialised fields were to go back to Somali and help their country progress.

^^^Dysentery is the trendy disease these days I hear. They’ve gone all retro on us.

This year, my nieces and nephews (eight of them) all went back to Somalia for the first time. These are children between the ages of six and fourteen. When they got back, I asked them how did they find it and if they were going to go visit Somalia again! Apart from the six year old who enjoyed chasing the goats about, all the rest swore not to ever set foot in “that†country ever again! I tend to trust children these days. But, I’ll still go just so I can see what it is that scared these kids that much.

I believe sooner or later we will all return to our Motherland. Regardless of our different nationalities and passports, one day we will go back. There is nothing like home for sure.

Taking a “Small Pharmacy†in our last visit to Somalia was the best think we did. Although, I felt so disappointed about the Medication there.

It’s too obvious that the Telecommunications services are more developed and progressing more than the Health Services. There are four main telecommunications companies and the fifth company will start soon. Most of the families in Ceerigabo (My city) have the Telephone Service in their houses, some of them have even two lines from two different companies like in my cousins’ houses. I mean it’s not necessary at all to have two lines in Somalia. It’s kinda a luxurious thing.

Frankly, I had a very bad image about the living standard in Somalia till I went there and changed my mind. I thought people are dying from starvation, no education, no clothes, and no entertainment. But what I had seen was completely different. They have 4 wheels cars, Telecommunications, International Satellite channels. They rent VHS tapes daily. Women are always wearing nice clothes, putting henna in their hands & feet. My mother was astonished with the traditional clothes there (dorooc). The textiles colors were so lovely and beautiful and much better than what we have in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. What is going on? Truly said “Seeing is believingâ€

The worst thing there is the medication. SS you are talking about a Malaria patient. But it seems you didn’t hear about the wrong surgeries happening in the Medical centers/clinics there. Most of the doctors there are so motivated to do surgeries just like that. They have the guts to do surgeries although they are not well experienced. It’s so easy to them to cut and open the patients without a proper diagnosing and examination. The so-called Surgeon will do different kinds of surgeries: For eyes, kidneys, uterine, dental surgery, bladder …etc. How come can he do operations for the eyez and the bladders too??!! Its two different fields.

I know the economical situation in Somalia is not helping to build specialized hospitals and to recruit experts in Medicine. But at least the healers/doctors whatever shouldn’t do any surgeries unless it’s required and the patient is examined well. Besides, they have to be sure about what they are doing for the patient’s sake not to gain money only. I had a very bad experience when I got sick. The way the doctor was inserting the injection in my veins irritated me a lot

I hope those who are investing in the Telecommunication to think wisely and consider their people’s health. Do we need five telecommunications companies  Let them build at least one good hospital with all the required doctors and equipped with all the necessary medical machines.

Taking a Video Camera was so helpful and great too. I can watch my relatives and friends anytime I want and remember the good times we’d spent together. It was a great joy for my relatives who never been to Somalia and those who left the country long time ago to see how Somalia look like now.

Well I don’t need to build a house. But one of my dreams is open an Internet Café with a small Library where I can put all my books and share them with others. Hope it comes true.

Peace, Progress and Prosperity for our Motherland.

i would go back to BURCO, and hmm..... ill take, lots of dough with me, i mean....i wanna have a share in a hospital, and build an orphanage/shelter home...

mistakes with wrong diagnoses happen everywhere, atleast in somalia it isnt all intentional...here in the UK, whenever i go to my aunts house, i get depressed if we talk health services, because she got countless stories of somalis having bad experiencs in hospitals....going in for simple surgery/examination and coming out with organs missing and sometimes even not coming out at all.

i think the doctors in somalia are good, the issue is money, id wanna join/setup a charity for those that are struggling and cant afford simple healthcare...well if the government fixes up, they could even support them people........

mmm your words have reminded me with that movie: Dirty Pretty Things . Iam wondering if you saw it? I liked that movie alot. It was so simple with unknown cast but the story & the performance was great. ALthough my dad hated the movie and said the Somali family are not real somali, he thinks they are African LOOL

Whateva!!

The same incident happened to me. I was about 8 years old, and I had gotten really sick. I remember the shots hey gave us, they were like the sizes of an elephants tusk! And you would think with something that big you wouldnt miss the darn Vein

Ngonge,

That was exactly my reaction when I was younger. I was born in the U.S., but by the age of 9 I had gone to Somalia 4 times! I hated it! the days felt sooo long, there was one television that only played Soccer  , once playing outside, i had gotten a piece of glass stuck in my left foot! The trip(s) sucked. But two years ago, when i visited again, I got to really take in what i hadn't before. It was like a field trip. Learning about the culture, tribe....one of my fondest memories was when i was out in downtown with my sister, there was a parade going on (very informal) and many of the candidates running in election were in trucks waving, passing out t-shirts and banners! I though, "how cute, look at them go" :D

I've decided to move there with my Hubbie insha'alla in some years! Can't wait!

Greetings everyone:

Hmmmm: I am just flattered at how many of you thought of the idea. Now what to take with you...I say take yourself first, than perhaps you can have everything you need shipped over!! Hey there is DHL..which will soon reach somalia as well. So I am hoping. I personally would like to take my mother with me, for I know she is yearning to go home more than anyone that I know!!

peace and my Allah bless us, and our Land!!!
