Mogadishu - Seventeen women have been arrested in southern Somalia's Middle Shabbelle region for ignoring a decree banning women from wearing veils, a spokesperson for the the area's administration said on Saturday.

"Seventeen women have been arrested for defying a decree that banned women from wearing the Muslim veil," spokesperson for the region, controlled by warlord Mohamed Omar Habeb, said on condition of anonymity.

Independent sources in Jowhar, 90km north of the capital Mogadishu, confirmed the arrests.

Habeb banned the Islamic veils on Thursday in a bid to foil male would-be attackers who could be disguised as women.

He has also banned vehicles with tinted windows from operating in his fiefdom, his spokesperson said.

"Any vehicle with tinted glasses will be impounded from Monday. This is a security threat that can undermine peace in Jowhar and neighbouring areas," he added.

In his decree last week, Habeb pointed out that he was a devoted Muslim but was compelled to act to avoid bloodshed by religious extremists, such as those who allegedly killed a Kenyan aid worker in the self-declared republic of Somaliland this month.

The decree is the first of its kind since Somalia was founded in 1960.

Salaam,

Bismillah, my goodness..is dis what our country has come to? To ban what Allah has ordered for women to wear? How could they stoop to dis level, so what if rebels are wearing veils? they need to take more pre-cautions 'n stop messin' with the religion. Just by "banning" the veil, they have sinned from the almighty in more ways than one...

Everyone, please pray for our country and ask Allah to show them the right path cause we all know only he has the power to do so

Salaam

Abwaan

I am not surprised with these kinds of actions because the guy (Mohammed Dheere) did other similar things in the past. I wonder what sort of award he is after to treat fellow Muslims and Somalis like this? Doesn't he realize that even the authorities of many non-Muslim countries wouldn't take such actions, and many Muslims enjoy the freedom of practising their believes in how they want in many western countries?

I wouldn't call such a person and many like him in Somalia leaders, they are just gangsters who took advantage of the situation in Somalia who we should unite against and bring them in front of the justice. Believe you me one day Allah will make that possible Insha Allaah. One shouldn't forget what happened to Siad Barre's forces; such powerful, bullies to Somalis for many years and the humiliation they faced in the end!!!
