17 terror suspects arrested in Toronto

By BETH DUFF-BROWN, Associated Press Writer

TORONTO - Seventeen Canadian residents were in custody Saturday on terrorism-related charges, including plots to use explosives in attacks on Canadian soil, authorities said.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said they arrested 12 male adults and five youth and foiled plans for terrorist attacks against targets in southern Ontario.

Officials showed evidence of bomb making materials, a computer hard drive, camouflage uniforms and what appears to be a door with bullet holes in it at a news conference Saturday morning.

"This group took steps to acquire three tons of ammonium nitrate and other components necessary to create explosive devices," said assistant Royal Canadian Mounted Police commissioner Mike McDonell said.

McDonell said that is three times the amount used to blow up the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.

The arrests were made Friday, with some 400 officers involved.

McDonell said the suspects were either citizens or residents of Canada and had trained together.

"The men arrested yesterday are Canadian residents from a variety of backgrounds. For various reasons they appeared to have become adherents of a violent ideology inspired by al-Qaida," said Luc Portelance, the assistant director of operations with CSIS — Canada's spy agency.

Heavily armed police officers ringed the Durham Regional Police Station in the city of Pickering, just east of Toronto, as the suspects were brought in late Friday night in unmarked cars which were drove into an underground garage.

The Toronto Star reported Saturday that Canadian youths in their teens and 20s, upset at the treatment of Muslims worldwide, were among those arrested.

The newspaper said they had trained at a camp north of Toronto and had plotted to attack CSIS's downtown office near the CN Tower, among other targets.

Melisa Leclerc, a spokeswoman for the federal Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day, had no comment on the arrests.

In March 2004, Ottawa software developer Mohammad Momin Khawaja became the first Canadian charged under the country's Anti-Terrorism Act for alleged activities in Ottawa and London. Khawaja was also named, but not charged, in British for playing a role in a foiled bomb plot. He is being held in an Ottawa detention center, awaiting trial.

The Canadian anti-terrorism law was passed swiftly following the Sept. 11 assaults, particularly after Osama bin-Laden's named Canada one of five so-called Christian nations that should be targeted for acts of terror. The others, reaffirmed in 2004 by his al-Qaida network, were the United States, Britain, Spain and Australian, all of which have been victims of terrorist attacks.

The anti-terrorism law permits the government to brand individuals and organizations as terrorists and gives police the power to make preventive arrests of people suspected of planning a terrorist attack.

Though many view Canada as an unassuming neutral nation that has skirted terrorist attacks, it has suffered its share of aggression, including the 1985 Air India bombing, in which 329 people were killed, most of them Canadian citizens.

Intelligence officials believe at least 50 terror groups now have some presence in the North American nation and have long complained that the country's immigration laws and border security are too weak to weed out potential terrorists.

Ah, yet another page straight out of the American book (ruse) of war on terror. First, the support for war is diminishing (in this case, Canadian troops in Afghanistan). The population questions why Canada has any troop in that country to begin with. Then the public must be scared into believing the war on terror is being fought there (Kandahar) so it wouldn't come here (Etobicoke). To accomplish this, descend upon some Arab/Muslim men in the middle of the night while being heavily armed. Call the news stations in advance to capture the whole "raid" on film for maximum television exposure. End result, the ignorant and scared public overwhelmingly supports the war again. Just like magic. Until a few months go by and the retarded public forgets again why their precious tax dollars are being pilfered in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Same film, different (Canadian) actors.

Castro,

Your visceral mistrust of Western governments and their motives is noted but it lacks due perspective. Matter of fact is if it wasn't for these deranged muslims (who represent only a tiny minority of world muslims) hellbent on achieving celestial poontang by indiscriminately massacring civilians, Western governments wouldn't muster the political capital to sell their War on Terror. There'd be no War on Terrorism. We're not talking about hypotheticals here, there is ample evidence forewarning us of what these misguided muslims are intent on doing. Bali, Egypt, Turkey, Madrid, London, Beslan etc etc. It is only the bravura of Western counter terrorism and intelligence agencies that we see less of the aforementioned atrocities.

You gotta take stand here Castro. Do you disagree with violent Islamic extremists? If so, then declare it unequivocally. Otherwise, by being unambiguous or by seeming prevaricating, you leave Westerners little choice but to lump all muslims together as potential enemies.

^^the media rules and has the power to manipulate the minds of the western population. Islam = Terror is the usual card thrown at them which they are often quick to believe.

Simply, neither. The west, just like the east, north and south, is ruled by elites of one persuasion or the other. Whether owners of land, mines, oil wells, or what have you, these elites install whomever they feel best serves their interests in political office. They also own and direct the media. So, both politicians and the media are tools available to the elite to keep the masses under control.

What happened in Canada is a classic example of using fear to force a population to support a war mysterious to the public. Recently, a Canadian soldier was killed in combat. She was young, white and blonde and her picture flashed across the tv screens the world over. Canadians started asking questions. "Why are we in Afghanistan spending our money and the lives of our youth?" They asked their politicans. And the death of that fine soldier coincided with the extension of the Canadian "mandate" in Afghanistan an extra two years through 2009. The public wanted answers to the death and the extension but the politicians have not the desire nor does the public have the aptitude to comprehend the answer. So to solve this problem, they find 17 "terrorists", of which 5 are children (LOL), and flash them across the screens.

It's Xaax all the way to the bank.

If you look at these pictures here, you'll see what I'm talking about.

060603_terror11_gal.jpg

Women clearly dressed in Islamic head cover the purpose of which is to link Islam to "terror". Of course, the real terrorists are in the background carrying police badges.

060603_terror12_gal.jpg

Reinforce the idea in the first picture by doing a close up on the police officer's face. Of course the Muslim women remain faceless and generic. Their identity is of no consequence here. Their dress is.

060603_terror4_gal.jpg

A man of "middle-eastern" decent riding in a tinted Ford Crown Victoria surrounded by armed policemen. The man also looks very "suspicious". LOL.

060602_terror1_gal.jpg

Just in case you didn't think the first one was suspicious, here's another one wearing the Islamic beard looking all sleepy. He's probably wondering what in the world is going on. He also probably works in a convenience store owned by his uncle and never has seen any bomb making material in his life.

060603_terror3_gal.jpg

More of the same. Just in case you're unconvinced of their guilt. I mean COME ON. The guys are handcuffed sitting in the back seat of the unmarked police cruiser. What more proof do you need?

060603_terror8_gal.jpg

The alleged bomb making material seized. But if you look at the caption of the original picture, here's what it says:

"Items are shown on display during a press conference in Toronto, Saturday, June 3, 2006. The bag of fertilizer, right, was not seized during the raid and was there for display purposes only." :D:D

Here's the source of these pictures. And this is the "liberal" paper in Toronto. LOOOOOL.

So, does any Canadian have any doubt why we still need to be in Afghanistan killing them gooks?

I didn't think so.

Bada bim bada fcuking bum.

P.S. Most of these men will be released after sometime for lack of evidence. If the public is still unconvinced, they'll ship 'em to Guantanamo Bay and let the Yankee war machine sort them out.

This is what is so startling about the west, they are able to control their citizens anytime they want, and the media is such a powerful tool to use against the masses. Thanks Castro, for clearly-up the fog. looks like Canada learned how to play the same game as America.

Controlling the masses is not such a novel idea invented by the west. It happens everywhere. The west has a population that has more freedoms than many other societies. To control a free society such as Canada, UK or the US, the rulers must jump through many hoops to gain effective control. They would control education, awareness and of course the media. They would shape the opinions of the populace through gradual indoctrination. If countries of the west were dictatorships, no dog and pony show would be presented to invade any country. It would just be invaded and the public told later.

Finally, the degree to which the public is actively involved and forces the rulers to listen is the degree with which foreign (or domestic) agression is limited. It's an inverse relationship. A populace more concerned with who wins "American Idol" than why Iraq is the mess that it is, is a well indoctrinated and preferred populace.

How about that American Idol season finale, eh? :(

The politics of divide and conquer is what the American people are experiencing, belonging to different camps that ascribe certain roles and responsibilities – the media has been able to divide America into two, the red states and blue states.

News has become entertainment mediated by a selected few who are considered experts – the problem with westerners in general is our trust in experts – and as Jane Jacobs suggests in her book Dark Age Ahead, we are headed towards a dark path, because these experts are entirely left to self-regulated and they are unable to – look at the Enron case, journalists in bed with the pentagon – what happened to responsible journalism.

Even rights become self-regulated, we subconsciously limit our own rights – like Somalis being afraid if a white person knocks on their door, even thou they might be selling vacuums.

Now even mainstream Americans have become Somalis in a sense, in terms of their relationship with the state – it’s a culture of fear and the testing of loyalty and devotion to the state – America is a well managed state, nothing is left unmanaged by the state.

^ I wouldn't be surprised one bit. Somalis are in fashion nowadays. From the London (foiled ;) ) bombings to the war in Muqdisho at the moment. The mere association of the word Somali provides more bang for the marketing (of war) buck.

Unfortunately, the Canadians did a little too much grandstanding for this to be credible. They had a bag full of broken remote controls and old Nokia cellphones to show as bomb material in the news conference. Not to mention the bag of Basmati rice doubling as fertilizer. Extremely cheesy, if you ask a veteran propaganda-buster like me. :D

They receive an F for originality and an F for effort.
