Somali gay community?

Recommended Posts

I think this is the whole purpose:

To liaise with agencies that can provide professional help and support for gays & lesbians living in the UK.

To Sherban,

I have always respected your opinions and your interest in our struggle as a people. But I think, in this thread you're being controversial just to be controversial. What are your intentions?

You’ve never heard, seen or imagined a gay Somali? Let’s assume you did. Are you asking us how we feel about it? You know the answer. What more is there to discuss? Yes, there are Muslim gays. Yes it is dead wrong. No, we wont support them or advocate for them. But we don’t/wont burn them alive(even in Somalia)either.

Our main objectives are:

* To provide and share information regarding homosexuality in general and more specifically in relation to Somalian culture and religion.

Both culture and religion are clear on this issue. Christians and Jewish people might change where they stand but Islam won't.

* To create an accepting support network within the Somalian gay community.

Good for them. They should support each other in their sins.

* To provide a space for Somalian gay & lesbians to meet, share experiences and socialise.

Cool.

* Initiate an honest and open discussion about homosexuality within the Somali community.

Here is an HONEST opinion: People should stop building their identity on their sexuality. Sexual Orientation is only a part of who you're.

* Promote positive images of Somalian gay and lesbians in Somali communities.

No one cares.

* To liaise with agencies that can provide professional help and support for gays & lesbians living in the UK.

Cool.

I don't know why everyone is biting Sherban's head off  What the hell is wrong with you all.

OZ for your information sherban's thread does not come up when you search somali gay. Instead billion other societies and promotional, support groups and personal blogs pop up, so take it easy.

FYI there has been threads about Somali gays on SOL before started by other Somalis, so just because this poster happens to be none-Somali you should not feel the need to get defensive.

In saying that, I don't see these people or the choices in life as an issue- they will answer to their lord like all other sinners.

C&H:

I knew they existed, I knew people don't burn them alive, and everything else you said.

I was just surprised that they're so visible, that they have this website, and that it gets so many hits. For such a taboo subject, their website gets a lot of traffic.

Again, you just search "Somali community" on Google (no need to put in "gay" or anything), and their website is the fifth web-page you get as a result.

Oh how I love to seeing Somalis being on the defensive for the sake of being defensive!

Sherban, in the Somali culture, the way we were brought up is that such topics were not open for discussion...It is xaraam; therefore there is nothing to talk about...Just like being a non-Muslim Somali was also almost never talked about...And then there are those people who when growing up were taught to talk about anything and everything openly, mainly those in the West, such as yourself...So excuse my fellow Somalis for not being as openly as you thought they'd be to discuss such issue...We feel it is wrong, so basically there's nothing to talk about...

This reminds me of when we arrived in Canada, a distant aunt said 'Canada is great, even the animals have rights... :D Back home, animals were chased, specially dogs, and at times stonned while being chased...

What I am trying to say is that, the way you're willing to talk about certain issues, it is just a big no no for us, as we feel such topics aren't worth talking about...

Sherban,

I didnt say you searched "Somali Gays" per se. But I figured you'd just shrug it off and understand that we're as diverse as any other community.

BTW, it aint about you being not Somali. There are some Somalis on SOL that I expect to post this kind of topic. I was just a bit surprised it was you, thats all.

This thread blew up all of a sudden....this is a good way to see how most Somalis' priorities lie in the wrong place when they don't want to talk about homosexuality, yet a large majority of them apparently have no problem with innocent people dying every day back home due to misguided qabiil and religious issues. If enough Somali people treated qabiilism the same way they treat homosexuality, Somalia may have never had a war to begin with.

Leave Sherban alone, he's not trying to cause trouble. This is actually intriguing for non-Somalis to see how something so reviled(as it should be) out in the open like this. But I'm not too shocked because one of the first Somalis I ever met was gay. There are bigger fish to fry.

Kool Kat,

Thanks for explaining this stuff to me.

However, I should probably mention I wasn't brought up in "the West" and I sure wasn't brought up in the "talk about everything openly" mentality. In fact I was raised in quite a conservative household, and there were loads of "no-no" subjects. I'd ask a lot of questions that never got an answer.

Which is exactly why I now like to talk about almost everything openly.

If I were you I would re-read that again. Or maybe this is a good way to see how 'some'people truly see Somalis as savages  .

^^ you now sis we're savages when one kills another human being for just being not from the same qabiil!

Its a horrible disease of course, we shouldn't deny that we're infected to a very great degree. Our salvation from that illness could only come by pointing out as it is, a savage action, hence making anyone practicing a savage person, and a group a savage people!

Peace..
