Attempted coup d'etat against leadership of the Amhara regional state: Abiy's Comments

Indeed the Somali over there might not even notice any economic hardship except for a slight reduction in the salaries of the Liyu police and politicians. They might quickly replace their reliance on Addis Ababa's budget contributions to taxation from the gains of unhindered trade with Djibouti, Somaliland, and Somalia. But that is only if the Somalis there maintain some unity and order and don't quickly get on each other's throats as well.

That is the key. Maintenance of general unity. Even if you do not actively do something just shuting one's mouth up and not looking for alliance outside of Somali is more than enough to keep unity.

If Illey and supporters had acted would have done a lot of damage, but accepted the false flags.

One Oromo Executive stated on Ethiopian TV that If the Tigreans had done even the smallest thing, they were capable to turn Ethiopia into Syria, they had the military..etc. So if nothing else Ethiopia should thank them for doing nothing offensive.

So far the Somali people understand the risks and ONLF is also behaving very responsibly. Actually more responsibly than Abtigis.I am certain the Somali will come out much better shape if something dramatic happened in Ethiopia. The last 10 years, a lot of work has been done to restore confidence of the people and elders.

Dream of 5 somalia restart now!.

Everyone in each enclave has to be successful and then they need each other for economy and development.

Sentiment cannot be food, clothing or transportation

Some of them have really advanced, will not join with someone that would take them back in governance.

Djibouti is not practical now until there is change of superpowers and world wide change..

According to Ethiopian bloggers this could be a plot to eliminate enemies not a coup. The general accused of the coup Asaminew Tsige had spoken few days ago on the commencement speech of 5000 Amhara region special force graduates. His popularity was sky high due to his constant threatening of Tigray. Why would he risk all while he is a rising star among the Amhara.

He was arrested in 2009 by Melez and was accused of planning a coup. He was nine years in gail and was released by Abiy government last year and became chief security of the Amhara region.

Unlike the early reports of fire at the Ethiopian military command, the Ethiopian Chief of Staff , and former Tigray general visiting him were  killed in his home by his bodyguards. If there is no any coup activity in Addis, I do not see why would anyone would overthrow a regional government while the federal army could intervene quickly.

Also there were reports about the accused general seeking the media telling them that there were no coup in the Amhara region. The hit squad entered the meeting room and shot the president, his adviser, the attorney general and others immediately. Coup plotters usually keep the leaders alive in the early stages for many obvious reasons.

The Tigray regional president and their media in the diaspora had campaigned against the Amhara regional leaders for inciting hatred and displacement of Tigray people. This could be the Tigray hir squad eliminating their enemies within the Amhara region and killing a Tigray Army Chief whom they consider traitor.

This might not be a coup but the Tigray purging their enemies and making the Amhara the new target of Abiy Ahmed. Either Abiy was on board and agreed the plots of TPLF in order to keep them inside country and sideline the agitating Amhara, or the TPLF is sending signals to show their deep state powers.

Coups do not happen in regional towns. this is probably a false flag by TPLF. Now the TPLF  can breath and watch while  others fight. The TPLF president announced last week that if things do not change , especially the Amhara regional leaders, he might leave Ethiopia for good.

Rug cadaagii soo rogaal celi ayey arintu u eegtahay.

Since last week when the TPLF chief declared his intention to leave Ethiopia, there were stumbles in Addis. Everyone knew that the Amhara region was building capacity to confront the Tigray region. There were skirmishes and real battles between their borders for the last few months. The Amhara were decimated in every confrontation at the border. Technically , nations with their own armies are forming within Ethiopia. Maybe Somalis should revive their Liyuu police and paramilitary forces like everyone else.

The Amhara might never accept to be subordinates of Oromo or anyone else, but they are not stupid. If they were plotting a coup it would have happened in Addis, and might have even used Tigray and others.

This assassinations and plots which are not a coup will keep the TPLF inside Ethiopia for the moment and the elimination and purging will shift to the Amhara side. Well done TPLF.

I knew Tigray wouldn't leave Ethiopia so quickly. Before the TPLF leaves Ethiopia, they have destroy it for good. If they leave now they would be blockaded and landlocked with Eritrea on the same Ethiopian side. The Tigray will leave when their relations with Eritrea gets better and Ethiopia enters chaos.

Well done TPLF.

Tillamook,

I am hoping against hope considering the gravity of the situation. But if war does come, a balkanized Ethiopia is more preferable than unitary totalitarian one regardless of what group assumes power. Abtigiis and ONLF have tough choices ahead of them.

On a side note, I made a bet with our Oodka saying Somaligalbeed will gain independence the before secessionists. I might just win that bet.😎

Galbeedi,

Whatever the underlying situation is, it created chaos and even more suspension among the group. This will eventually become unsustainable.

Che,

Certainly you might win that bet earlier than we think.

It is a new chaos.

By the way, it did happen before. in the seventies, there were plots, assassinations and coups before Mengistu showed up and killed everyone.  General Aman Andom of Eritrean descent was hesitant, Tafari Bante of Oromo was just like Abiy dithering and indecisive , and finally ruthless Mengistu came and killed everyone including the president.

Mustafe Cagjar should consult other Somalis and plan for the future . This could be Yugoslavia part 2.

but this can only be done by defeating completely all the former corrupt elites from as far back as the days of Haile Selasie, to Mengistu, to Zenawi who all yearn to get back in power to reinstall their failed autocratic visions for Ethiopia.

Exactly.

That yearning is talked openly by Amhara and others. They want unitarian Ethiopia enforced by force. That train is left but the yearning is there, just like some Somalis are nostalgic of the past glories

Absolutely.

He should keep his fight with Illey in the back pocket.

What ever changes he did in Liyu to please the Oromo, should be repaired. The Kilil TV and Radio broadcast as well, which he almost killed.

Statement from PM's office

The Abiy group in the Oromo are terrified that the Amxara and Tigray might get together, because some Amxara are calling for that. Its amazing what people say when desperate or scarred.

Every regional leader, every Oromo minister of defense..are all making statement.

Help was offered and made public, from Eritrea. That will be the ultimate humiliation for Tigray if it happened, but Abiy just made a statement that he rejected Eritrea offer.

Next should be Farmaajo.

Its a bit funny.

Tigray wants Oromo and Amxara to go at it.

Oromo wants Tigray and Amxara to go at it

Amxara wants Tigray to stay neutral or even help.

Tigray has the most all round capacity in administration, security, military and experienced population and also most unity in comparison to anybody.

galbeedi,

The fighting in their border is Agew and Amxara, but the Amxara do not want the name Agew mentioned, so they say Agew is fighting for Tigray therefore they prefer to call it Tigray.

  • Haha - That was funny. You made me laugh! 1

This general with Shia style loyal special forces was threat to both Oromo and TPLF.

Whether this was a real coup that was aborted or Amhara radicals eliminating their enemies, it's impact will affect Ethiopia deeply.

Abiy Ahmed might have got an Erdogan style God sent opportunity to crush his enemies once for all.The TPLF doesn't mind giving him a helping to sideline the Amhara.
