Switzerland: the perfect system for the Somali people

But the choice/decision to build Rome was taken in one day at the senate. And for more than a thousand years they never looked back.

Imagine how much energy and time and human life is spent in Somalia just going into two different directions of Unitary or Federal. Its all most same amount spent on going the 5 Star irridentist or work in the five parts and succeed in all of them as they are.

One cannot be going for a generation in one direction, next generation in another direction yet another generation in completely different direction.

Imagine if the First TFG had taken to heart what they agreed in theory and worked on it. Federalism they agreed, but immediately went against it to unitary.

From experiences world wide, you cannot go back to unitary from Federalism. That is tried and tested and killed few countries. I think is time all Somali realize this and move on to build the system, implement it.

What Farmaajo and co. trying is waste of time. Going through the round one more time.

As a staunch Federalist myself, and having the confidence that Federalism is the one true democratic path forward for our clan based society...I welcome Farmaajo &Co. , and for that matter, any other Somali out there who wishes to promote Centralism or any other alternative form government for Somalia.

I believe they have every right to make their case why they feel it is in our interest to revert to centralism and as such I don’t see it as a “waste of time”; ultimately, the will of a majority of Somali people shall decide the success or failure of these contending ideologies.

The critics here either have amnesia or are guilty of intellectual laziness for what you have proposed is nothing more than what we have already experimented and saw utterly fail.

Haatu's feudalism might have been a good solution few centuries ago but today it is part and parcel of the clannish problems ravaging our society. Puntland and Somaliland are no role models.

Galbeedi's "benevolent dictatorship" is of no use as we have seen it in our recent past. Siyaad Barre; despite his crimes was initially probably the most benevolent dictator in Africa. Although he was guilty of cruelty and in the later part of his reign divide and rule policy, he cannot be accused of the level of corruption and incompetence we see today.

Tillamook's federalism is undefined. The one we now have on paper in the South is already failing before it is even implemented. What kind of federal system we want? How to share power among rival clans both in the federal level and in the state level? How to bring accountability and transparency to the system where there is so much competing interests? How to give real power to the electorate? How to bring the corrupt and evil among our politicians to justice? How to give justice to the oppressed? (the feudal clan system fails them). How to empower the minorities? All these questions and many more other serious issues of contention need answers. The Swiss model although not perfect provides solutions to many of the issues we are struggling with. If you guys don't think the Swiss model is suitable for our society, please explain to us how and why it is unsuitable.

The "feudalism" I suggest is the most practical and workable solution we have today. And the formation of S/Land and P/Land was a success story for the Geed system. The problem is that after the initial success, they abandoned it for hazy notions of 'democracy' and party politics which are doomed to fail in the Somali context. We basically have a pseudo-clan system with 4.5 currently. Might as well abolish all pretences and just put everything out in the open. How will it work in practise? The first step is to bring all clan elders together and iron out differences from the civil war. Without doing this, everything else is an exercise in futility. Then we can decide on how we will share the government and under what terms. We need an organic xero-u-dhalad solution to our problems, not faulty imports.

PS: the "feudal" system is the most egalitarian of them all from the perspective of the common man. Any man who is unsatisfied with his suldaan/ugaas/wabar/etc can call a shir and ask for the wider tribe to rectify the situation. Clan elders can also be removed should the clan agree to do so. Anyone who knows Somali culture knows these mechanisms well. Think democracy with Somali characteristics (to borrow a leaf from the Chinese communist party).
