  1. Hallo all,

I dont know where to begin.

Well, to start with let me express my ack/ment of the comments, critique and questions raised in response to my question. Reading your reactions has been my mid-morning break for the past days: I enjoyed coming here....of course hoping to find some useful tips. It’s funny how disillusioned the human mind can be at times. However, I am sure you will all agree that, despite the critique, my point has generated a though-provoking discussion that went beyond the initial topic. It took us to different dimensions; discoveries on wild fantasies with cats and bees!!, explorations on the meaning of sexuality, reproduction, orgasm, etc in Somali surroundings, but also from personal perspectives. I am glad it did. Am sure you are too.

I came here seeking information on a topic that was and still is of great importance to me. Some suggested I should have used more words, more colour, more this, more that in making my point. Some had difficulty with the topic in general. Others assumed I am a man and laughing my head off somewhere. I was laughing my head off alright….at the likes of those who wasted their time making silly assumptions and commentaries. You don’t know about my situation. You just bloody don’t.

My q was directed to Somali women who have been through FGM and were/are having problems in their sexual lives. I came here because (1) I can’t find this kind of info anywhere (i.e. sexual problems due to FGM) (2) I thought anonymity would help (i.e. stimulate a constructive discussion-esp on SOL) (3) I sought personal advice from sisters (4) address the issue as it’s inadequately talked about….. many Somali women evidently admit that they have no sex. probs., or say they know a friend who does, when in fact they do. I wonder what shape this discussion would have taken… had this been an-only-women’s forum… I might be the first to start this topic but am not the only one with this problem.

I want to thank the sisters- and men who have replied with some useful tips. I want to esp thank the sisters who have written me PMs. BUT encourage them to publicly share their views with others as well =enlightening to many.

Hoping that the topic will stay on track… and those with issues will butt out of it!

  5. Dear sisters,

I am new here....but am loving it more and more.

I am kinda... shy to be asking u all this...i know its a sensitive topic and that many will read and take-off  . But having been through this site and having seen the high level of discussions and esp. openness, i am tempted to do so.

I just turned 26 and I recently got married. I come from a very traditional background and I've been through FGM- the bad pharoanic way.

My question is; During sexual intercourse..I feel absolutely nothing in terms of enjoyment.... nothing at all except discomfort. Talking about these issues with other Somalis is really hard...Its hard asking sisters; do u enjoy sex? do you reach orgasm at all? or which style do you like the most?

Maybe anonymity will help. I was wondering if those of you sisters esp those who have been through FGM...do enjoy sex at all...do you reach orgasms? and how do you do it?

Please i am very interested in your views...esp. experiences and i will appreciate every reply.

thx for your time...and sisterly advice! ;)

  6. Hi Farrah,

Great topic! I have written much on the topic-mainly from a health perspctive. I have a BA and MA in Anthropology too. Everywhere in the world you will find sympathisers and opponents of the practice. I can bring you into contact with different research progs on the topic and give you some European contacts and links etc.

However if it's mainly our opinions that you are interested in, then perhaps it'd be a good idea to provide us with some 'guiding questions', otherwise..you never know where the mind will go.....

Good luck with your research and your BA thesis!

    Browny,
