  1. Does every thing cause cancer? Most of the scientific reserches are based on observation that are interpreted from high-dose animal cancer tests( iam not saying all of them) therefore we shouldn't be scered right after a reserch has been published.Words are carefully choosen for an emotional impact.

  2. Jumatatu, now you know that the kalahari desert occupies most of the Bostwana and part of namibia and south Africa.Where else can you get free geography lessons other than in SOL?.I was mad with Bush for refusing to sign the kyoto protocal on wednesday.

PS.I was rushing to class when i wrote the first post!.

  3. 4. Baashi, let me thank you for your response first(mahatsanit).Looking at the way things are, clanism is the main culprit that is causing the disintegration of the somali society, this is obvious to a first grade somali child.Loyalty to ones clan is something that is ineluctable within our society.Since Somali nationalism is jousting with clanism, don't you think it will apropriate to divide Somalia in to different sub-units whereby each and every little corner (clan based)will be given the final authority to decide independently of each other under the umbrella of a main government that can not act without the approval of the clan based final authority vote.I know this will be unfair to the minority but they can build a coalition with whoever they choose to join. The clan based government can come together and pool their sovoreign power together and form a government that will prevent the majority (clan in this matter) from forming unchallenged government. This is my opinion,i think the whole clan thing came from battle freinship during earlier pastrolism life and that it has nothing to do with blood relation (eventhough it turned out this way later). My message to the new government is when they settle down and form a government let them form a school curiculum that project the clanism as a myth and not blood kinship(ofcourse i am dreaming).Don't you think it is time for the newly elect president to go home and prove to the people that he is there leader?, instead of ruling through proxy?.

  5. Bashi-isn't this a world of scarcity? Scarcity that is confined to luck of leaders with good character and personality. The somali leaders are taking for a ride the poor and the helpless. The meaning of life have long been erased from the hearts of the so called Somali leadership. They have fogetten that their remarks and actions are bound to engender despair, strife, hope and goodwill of the society. The somali people have reached a point where they can only watch from the sideline while their leaders are indulged in inveighing each other with cheap shot politics. I know iam stigmatizing this leaders but what are you left with when the only thing that is left for the people is to face any danger with trepidation. The somali leaders have thwarted the future of Somalia.Baashi, could you please acquint me with your thoughts about the current leadership crisis(you look like someone who knows more).Do you think that things will change for the better when this current generation are long gone(dead) or the future is at our door step?.I have not well versed my self with the Somali politics but from what i can see the mass are taken for a ride by this ingrate leaders.

  7. Mauritania's 'wife-fattening' farm

    By Pascale Harter

    BBC, Mauritania

Obesity is so revered among Mauritania's white Moor Arab population that the young girls are sometimes force-fed to obtain a weight the government has described as "life-threatening".

A generation ago, over a third of women in the country were force-fed as children - Mauritania is one of the few African countries where, on average, girls receive more food than boys.

Now only around one in 10 girls are treated this way. The treatment has its roots in fat being seen as a sign of wealth - if a girl was thin she was considered poor, and would not be respected.

But in rural Mauritania you still see the rotund women that the country is famous for. They walk slowly, dainty hands on the end of dimpled arms, pinching multicoloured swathes of fabric together to keep the biting sand from their faces.

"I make them eat lots of dates, lots and lots of couscous and other fattening food," Fatematou, a voluminous woman in her sixties who runs a kind of "fat farm" in the northern desert town of Atar, told BBC World Service's The World Today programme.

When they are small they don't understand, but when they grow up they are fat and beautiful

    Fatematou

    'Fat farm' manager

Although she had no clients when I met her, she said she was soon expecting to take charge of some seven-year-olds.

"I make them eat and eat and eat. And then drink lots and lots of water," she explained.

"I make them do this all morning. Then they have a rest. In the afternoon we start again. We do this three times a day - the morning, the afternoon and the evening."

    Punishment

She said the girls could end up weighing between 60 to 100 kilograms, "with lots of layers of fat."

Fatematou said that it was rare for a girl to refuse to eat, and that if they did, she was helped by the child's parents.

"They punish the girls and in the end the girls eat," she said.

"If a girl refuses we start nicely, saying 'come on, come on' sweetly, until she agrees to eat."

Fatematou admitted that sometimes the girls cried at the treatment.

"Of course they cry - they scream," she said.

"We grab them and we force them to eat. If they cry a lot we leave them sometimes for a day or two and then we come back to start again.

"They get used to it in the end."

She argued that in the end the girls were grateful.

"When they are small they don't understand, but when they grow up they are fat and beautiful," she said.

"They are proud and show off their good size to make men dribble. Don't you think that's good?"

    Change

However, the view that a fat girl is more desirable is now becoming seen as old-fashioned.

A study by the Mauritanian ministry of health has found that force-feeding is dying out. Now only 11% of young girls are force fed.

We're fed up of fat women

    Yusuf, 19

"That's not how people think now," Leila - a woman in the ancient desert town of Chinguetti, who herself was fattened as a child - told The World Today.

"Traditionally a fat wife was a symbol of wealth. Now we've got another vision, another criteria for beauty.

"Young people in Mauritania today, we're not interested in being fat as a symbol of beauty. Today to be beautiful is to be natural, just to eat normally."

Some men are also much less keen on having a fat wife - a reflection of changes in Mauritanian society.

"We're fed up of fat women here," said 19-year-old shop owner Yusuf.

"Always fat women! Now we want thin women.

"In Mauritania if a woman really wants to get married I think she should stay thin. If she gets fat it's not good.

"Some girls have asked me whether they should get fat or stay thin. I tell them if you want to find a man, a European or a Mauritanian, stay thin, it's better for you. But some blokes still like them fat."

And while there still men who like their women big, Fatematou is on hand to fatten them up with her years of experience.

I asked her if she ever felt cruel, beating and force feeding children?

"No! It's not cruel to make girls fat!" she said.

"Me, I've seen 10-year old girls give birth. I tell you, 10 years old!

"Once they are fat and beautiful they can serve their men well, once they are fat they can be married."

  8. The reason we need BHM is because there is a crisis in the world of black America and the crisis is one which Scholars like Cornell West(i guy i admire) categorized it in two fold:Too much poverty and too little self love. The poverty arises from unfair distribution of wealth and power. To improve the standard of the black community we do need remainders like BHM which emphasis on visionary progressive agendas that promotes the black spirit. The only way we as black people can overcome the racial inequalities that exists is through following the footsteps of the brave men and women who fought for the freedom we are enjoying.

  9. The history of black America is a history of strife and determination to earn respect and dignity in the eyes of racist ingrate. The black history month is celebrated to bring national attention to the contribution of black Americans in the history of the world.Black America contribution have long been ignored by the Anglo-Saxon society.I will leave you with a quote from my favorite black person -W.E.Du Bois- "The history of the American Negro is the history of this strife,—this longing to attain self-conscious manhood, to merge his double self into a better and truer self. In this merging he wishes neither of the older selves to be lost. He would not Africanize America, for America has too much to teach the world and Africa. He would not bleach his Negro soul in a flood of white Americanism, for he knows that Negro blood has a message for the world. He simply wishes to make it possible for a man to be both a Negro and an American, without being cursed and spit upon by his fellows, without having the doors of Opportunity closed roughly in his face".

    Long live Black history!

  11. 1. Humor that offends people (even though unintentional) is admirable because humorless folks deserve to be offended.

    2. If Ngonge’s humor offends you the nomads, well you better to get a crocodile skin.

Baashi, looking at the way you set his argument we can ask ourselves is Ngonge using his humour as a tool to get his point across or as a weapon of mass destruction (WMD) to offend others?.If the intention(which is imposible to know) of the humour is to use as a tool to enlighten the offended then i think that is beneficial. The second question we have to ask ourselves will be is he using his humour to offend others so that he might get his point across?-If so then we shouldn't be falling for his specious humour!.

  12. Where was i that day? 13. Do you know that approximately 1.6 million people are killed by indoor kitchen smoke?(Warwick& Doig). This silent killer has been lightly ignored by people(including Somalia) for long time.More than a third of humanity, 2.4 billion people burn biomass (wood, crop residues, charcoal and dung) for cooking and heating. The hardest heat segment of the population are children and their mothers.Mothers and their children spend aproxiamtely seven hours per day by the fire(when cooking canjero and bariis). The women suffer the most because it is the women who cook i developing countries with their children strapped around their backs.Do you know that o a typical three stoned wood fired stove about 18% of the energy goes to the canjeero, 8% in to the smoke and 74 % is a waste heat. This burning woods can produce harmful levels of gases, particles and dangerous compounds that can effect the lung of your mother, sister, brother or the whole society.Do you that a woman who is exposed biomass fire smoke has between two and four times more chances of suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases than a woman who is not exposed. There has been studies showing that people in homes using wood for cooking are at 2.5 times more risk of active tuberclosis.Cataract is one of the most frequently reported complaint of exposure to smoke. So please when you are sending the 200 dollars to your mother or any relatives advice them to build smoke hoods in the kitchen and increase ventilation through more windows. If they can afford it tell them to buy advanced cooking stoves.(Adapted from Smoke the killer in the kitchen by Hugh Warwick and Allison Doin 2004).
